A Philippine government official confirmed that 17 Filipino workers had been arrested for attending an illegal party in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), social media posts that went viral said some Filipinos were among those arrested at a “forbidden” Halloween party in Riyadh, ABS-CBN News reported.
A video that went viral claimed 19 Filipino women and five other men of different nationalities organized the party. Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Elmer Cato said the DFA was aware of the social media posts and said they need an official report from the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh.
However, Labor Secretary Silverstre Bello III confirmed that 17 Filipino workers had been arrested and were only attending the party and were not the organizers. Bello said someone called the police to report a party was in progress, which is not allowed in Saudi Arabia.
Bello has instructed Filipino officials in Riyadh to monitor the situation and to contact the next of kin of the arrested Filipinos.
