Beijing appears to be responding to media reports in recent days that the US is stepping up operations in the South China Sea, according to the Pentagon.
US media outlets reported a statement from the US Defense Department describing “increasingly aggressive” maneuvers conducted by a China ship, which engaged in a literal game of chicken with a US warship on Sunday.
“A [People’s Republic of China] Luyang destroyer approached USS Decatur in an unsafe and unprofessional maneuver in the vicinity of Gaven Reef in the South China Sea,” Captain Charles Brown, a spokesman for US Pacific Fleet, said of the incident, CNN reported.
The destroyer “conducted a series of increasingly aggressive maneuvers accompanied by warnings for the Decatur to depart the area,” Brown said, adding that the ship approached within 45 meters of the front of the US ship.
The US ship maneuvered to prevent a collision, according to Brown.
But he said: “Our forces will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows.”
The Chinese response to the drama came shortly after.
“The US has been repeatedly sending warships to the islands and the adjacent waters in the South China Sea, which has seriously threatened China’s sovereignty and safety,” Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said on Tuesday.
“The Chinese military will resolutely perform its defense duties and continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard our sovereignty and the regional peace and stability,” Wu said.
The US comes all the way to those seas because our allies are there. The US will defend our allies against the chinese who continue to harrass and bully anyone who travel through international waters. china only picks on those who cannot fight them on the level as china, but the US will not stop protecting it’s allies and we will not stop using international waters. If china wants to really stop us stop saying we are a threat to china and defend the waters , fire on who ever they think is in china territory waters. But they wont… to scared they cannot defeat the US and they know it. quanity does not mean quality the US would win in a war.

China has unsurped the South China Sea from the littoral countries. The entire world should support US, especially the affected nations like Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and also Indonesia. The last has the overlapping claim in Natuna Sea.

China is the one bullying small fightless neighbouring countries .It did not respect international law of the sea claiming the whole SCS. What a barbaric claim. China accuses US for intrusion and causing instability in the area. Who believes China’s big lie and claim.;where in fact China is the one doing it. Its small neighbor countries complain against its illegal activities in the area. US was sailing for a long time in the area in accordance of international law of the sea provision which China denied. Small countries in the area do not have any complain for US activity because it abide according to law. The presence of US in the area is to put on check the aggressive behaviour of China which its neighbour countries complaining. China claims that it just protecting its sovereignty in the area. The million dollar question now is: Is China alone has sovereignty in the area???Where are the sovereignties of those small countries surrounded the area particularly Philippines and the free sailing areas of the sea where the international law of the sea set.
