Twelve-year-old skateboarder Bunga Nyimas Cinta of Indonesia is now officially the youngest medalist in the history of the Asian Games.
She broke the age record by racking up 19.8 points to secure bronze in the women’s street skateboarding contest at the 18th Asian Games, IDN Times reported.
This was a special win for Cinta, as the medal came three days after her mother’s 35th birthday, and she was quoted as saying the medal was her birthday present to her, Morunga Express reported.
Her prowess at tricks such the kickflip and the stalefish powered her to third place in the competition, in which gold was taken by Filipino skateboarder Margielyn Didal, 19, and silver by Japanese competitor Isa Kaya, 17.
Cinta’s initial ambition was to be a doctor, but she has since chosen skateboarding as her preferred profession. Her next goal is to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, where skateboarding will make its debut as an Olympic sport.
Another record was broken on August 29, when 9-year-old Aliqqa Novvery, also from Indonesia, became the youngest athlete ever to compete at the Asian Games. Novvery participated in the same street skateboarding category as compatriot Cinta, finishing 6th out of 8 finalists, on 13.3 points.
