A 33-year-old man fell to his death from a cliff while he was hiking along a stream on Lantau Island on Wednesday.

The man started his trail at noon with a male friend from Yat Tung Estate in Tung Chung and set out to trek to Nei San Ravine, Apple Daily reported.

At 4pm, police received a report from a man who said his friend had lost his balance and fallen from a cliff.

A rescue mission was launched involving police, firemen and government flying services and they found the unconscious man at 6pm.

The victim was flown to the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on Hong Kong Island, where he was pronounced dead.

Nei San Ravine, also known as Mo Tin Ngai, is located near Tung Chung. It has several small waterfalls and large boulders popular among hikers and climbers. It is classed as one of the most challenging hikes in the city, and in good conditions can take about 6.5 hours to complete.
