A Filipina domestic worker, who was filmed being publicly scolded and humiliated by her employer in a park last week, had handed in her resignation letter.
On Sept. 14, a five-minute video clip which went viral on social media showed the female employer scolding her in a public park because her son was given a piece of cookie.
The maid said she tried to explain but the employer did not listen. She then went to other place and cried but the employer followed her and kept yelling at her.
Rosalyn, a 34-year-old mother of four from Cebu of the Philippines, came to Hong Kong for the first time a year ago, Next Magazine reported. She said she paid 50,000 Philippine Peso (US$926) to an agent to work for a family of three in Tin Shui Wai in the New Territories.
Rosalyn said when she first arrived in Hong Kong, she worked in the female employer’s home in Tin Chung Court during the day and took care of a young child, who is now 17-month-old. She rested at her male employer’s sister home and had a private room to sleep in.
Things changed when the employer moved into a private residential block nearby. Rosalyn said the female employer could not control her emotions and shouted at her all the time and became angry every time she prepared food for her son.
After the incident in the park, Rosalyn told the employer she wanted to terminate the contract. The employer then apologized and promised her not to lose her temper again. However, the domestic worker was shouted at again two days later.
Rosalyn also claimed that she had to work for 17 hours a day, slept in a storeroom with paper boxes as a mattress and two surveillance cameras set in the apartment monitored her 24 hours a day. She said she had had enough and resigned on Wednesday and packed her belongings.
“I have to protect myself also because I have children. I love myself. I don’t want anybody can make me down (look down on me),” Rosalyn said. She is now seeking assistance from the domestic worker union.
Betty Yung Ma Shan-yee, the Hong Kong Employers of Overseas Domestic Helpers’ Association chairman, said employers should not scold their domestic workers in public.
An employer should solve problems in a gentle way or deal with them at home, she added.

That’s the way to handle that humiliation…Self respect..not every time you just accept their animalistic treatment…We are workers who served them, help them..for us to earn that salary…we deserved more than that..a salary that we give to our family as a form of love and sacrifices…is it hard to do humility? respect? we are human too…we know how to feel embarrassed, we can understand and respect you, if you just talk to us in a good way…scold us privately we can accept it..but don’t do that in public..we are not illiterate…in our country we studied, we been teach GMRC (Good Moral and Right Conduct)..since K1..if you put yourself on our shoes..do you like other to that unto you ?I am lucky my employer isn’t like you..they treat like their family and I treat them and served them the way they treated me..We commit mistake ..no one is perfect..we say Sorry..we explain, can’t you open your ears to listen to our side..then if you don’t want us..return us to our agency or terminate the contract rather than treating us like animals.
God bless you Kabayan…I salute you.
Good decision kabayan marami pa din nman mabubuting employer dyan good luck Godbless????
That is why some helpers take revenge by hurting there kids or doing something with there food (though i stongly disagree) just to get even with employers of this kind. Just right the helper terminated the contract to end her agony before she lost her right mind and temper and do something wrong.
If the hk government properly and strictly educate employers this things will not going to happen. They should imposed strict Laws that employers MUST follow whether they like it or not. and that Employees should have enough courage to report those abuse employers.
Dont let this kind of animal hire a helper again!
A maid is like a mirror to the employer….treat me like that, i show you the same and treat you like that
Singapore has a policy that if an employer goes through three maids in a short space of time, or if one resigns, the employer is asked what happened by the Ministry of Manpower…its frowned upon in Sg to scold/mistreat maids. For me, they are an extension of the family…treat them well
Margaux Yuri aka maria consuelo…why no way?? You support this kinda attitude to your fellow compatriate
Agreed…maybe she has underlying issues such as financial or work issues…or as you say her husband cheating on her. However that does not give her carte blanche to treat her badly.
Same in Stinkapore…treat maids like slaves and show no respect.
With this kind of employer, sorry to say but if i were on her shoe silent revenge will takes place. ….Treat us nice and we”ll be nicer and even more. …Treat us bad then expect us to do the same….
i wish she could not have a helper anymore. her behavior is very rude.
????hahahaha thats right
I remembered one of the official in hk government say " If you don’t like in hk ( DH) pack your things and leave in hk..
I read in the article last month i think.
Hope the.Phil.consulate wont let this evil woman hire Pinay.helper again!
that’s right kbayan…don’t let anybody look u down, u’ve given her the chance to change her attitude..but she’s a hopeless case. makakatagpo rin yan ng katapat nya. goodluck sa next work mo,girl.
Ashamed for some employers, they should know that they hired a helper to HELP them do HOUSEWORK and most important HELP them take care their KIDS. Some employers act like they bought their HELPERS.
