A Filipino airport staff member was arrested and charged with stealing cash from a Taiwanese tourist’s bag on Thursday evening during a security inspection in Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in the Philippines.

Cheng Chun Shu placed his two bags on the X-ray for screening at the airport. Shu noticed that one of the airport screeners took something out of his bag and put it in his pocket, ABS-CBN News reported.

Shu also saw another airport screener take a pack of cigarettes from another bag. As Shu was in a hurry to catch his flight, he did not check to see what was taken until he boarded his plane. When he checked his bag, Shu found that US$2,600 was gone.

He asked his friends to report the matter to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA). The MIAA called the two airport screeners in for questioning and one admitted to the theft.

The report did not disclose the identities of the airport screeners.

The MIAA also obtained security footage that showed the airport screener taking something from an envelope that was inside the Taiwanese’s bag. The airport screener was arrested and is in the custody of the Pasay police.

On Monday, Shu returned to the Philippines to file a case against the man. The suspect was charged with theft. Police are also charging the suspect with unjust vexation as he became violent during questioning.
