One Taiwanese tourist was killed and another was injured by a hippo after they walked too close to the animal to take photos near Lake Naivasha in Kenya on Saturday.
Chang Ming Chuang, 66, was pronounced dead at the Naivasha District Hospital, Reuters reported. Wu Peng Te, 62, survived but was treated for his injuries at the same hospital.
The two tourists were tracking the hippo before they were attacked by the animal, according to The Kenya Wildlife Service. Several witnesses at the scene said the men moved too close to the hippo.
The foreign ministry of Taiwan said it had sent someone from their South African office, while China, which has diplomatic ties to Kenya and claims Taiwan as part of its sovereignty, also sent diplomats to the scene.
A rise in water levels had limited pastures for hippos, which rendered them restricted to farms and hotel areas, said David Kilo, chairman of the Lake Naivasha Boat Owners Association. The elevated water level was the result of months of heavy rain after a drought last year.
Every year, about 500 people are killed by hippos in Africa. The animal can run at 18 to 30 miles per hour.
