A a 41-year-old Pakistani man was arrested in Hong Kong on Tuesday for allegedly impersonating a police officer and committing theft.
The man, an asylum seeker who had stayed in Hong Kong for 10 years, was arrested in Mong Kok in Kowloon, news website HK01.com reported. On August 10, he allegedly claimed to be a police officer and detained a 34-year-old Bangladeshi man on Shanghai Street in Mong Kok.
He searched the man and took his phone before running away. The Bangladeshi man then filed a report with police.
After an investigation, police believed the man had been involved in a similar case on August 8 in the same district when another Bangladeshi man was robbed.
A man claiming to be a police officer took a mobile phone worth HK$4,000 (US$509), HK$4,000 in cash and a recognizance form, which is a permit allowing the holder to stay in Hong Kong temporarily.
After the robberies, Urdu-speaking police were deployed to the area to warn non-Chinese speakers about the crimes.
Great there are Urdu speaking police. This is why we need even more police who speak various languages.
