A maid in Singapore was praised for helping save a toddler when a fire broke out on the 23rd floor of the condominium she was working in for a Korean family.

A condo in Alexandra View was engulfed by flames on Monday evening, prompting about 100 residents to evacuate to safety, among them a foreign domestic worker and her employer’s three-year-old son.

At about 7:40pm, a fire started in a unit on the 23rd floor of Block 8 of The Metropolitan, which was home to a Korean family, the Shin Min Daily News reported.

The family’s 45-year-old maid, Sunarsih, said she was with the toddler in the apartment when she heard an explosion and saw flames and smoke coming from the neighbor’s apartment.

She immediately raised the alarm with her employer and covered the boy’s nose and mouth with a wet towel and carried him downstairs.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force deployed three compressed air foam backpacks and a water jet to put out the blaze. There were no injuries.

A preliminary investigation suggested the fire could have been caused by a faulty compressor in an air-conditioning system.
