Police have arrested an academic at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) for murder after his wife’s body was found in a suitcase and placed inside a wooden box in his office on Tuesday.
The suspect, Dr Cheung Kie-chung, is a 53-year-old associate professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is also warden of the Wei Lun Hall dormitory where the couple has lived with their daughter and son.
Cheung reported to police on August 20 that his wife had not returned home after they had an argument, Apple Daily reported.
After checking surveillance camera footage at the dormitory, police found that his 53-year-old wife did not leave the building. Instead, the camera captured Cheung pushing a wooden box on a trolley from the building.
Police superintendent Law Kwok-hoi of the Hong Kong Island Regional Crime Headquarters revealed that police raided to Cheung’s office in Haking Wong Building on the university’s Pok Fu Lam campus on Tuesday evening and found a wooden box in his office.
The wooden box had six white wooden boards screwed into it, and it had been tightened with screws and sealed with window glue.
Officers found a suitcase in the box and a woman’s body was discovered inside the suitcase. She was in her underwear with a power cable around her neck.
Police suspected the woman may have been strangled but the cause of death will have to be confirmed after forensic tests.
Superintendent Law said the couple had no financial problems and there was no history of domestic violence. But on the night of August 16, the wife argued with her daughter about the hygiene of the toilet and the wife blamed her husband for not supporting her and they continued arguing, Oriental Daily reported.
