As the Syrian regime’s forces advanced toward them on Sunday, hundreds of imperiled White Helmets rescuers and their family members were evacuated by Israel to Jordan in preparation for resettlement in the West, AFP reported.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said Britain, Germany and Canada had initially agreed to welcome around 827 rescuers and their relatives but eventually settled on 422. A spokesman said they would be allowed to stay in Jordan for three months.

Founded in 2013, the Syria Civil Defense, popularly known as the White Helmets, is a network of first responders that rescues people wounded by air strikes, shelling or explosions in rebel-held areas.
