A 45-year-old man who inflicted serious injuries on another man during a fight was charged with one count of wounding and inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent at the Kowloon City Magistrates Court on Thursday.
The injured man suffered brain damage and doctors say he is likely to fall into a vegetative state.
Last Monday, Shum Man-fai had dinner with his ex-girlfriend, aged 38, in Kowloon City. After Shum left, the woman’s current boyfriend, Wong Yat-ming, showed up and accused her of having an on-and-off relationship with Shum, Apple Daily reported.
Wong allegedly hit the woman and Shum, who was nearby, saw what was happening and tried to stop Wong hitting her. The two men then fought and Wong ended up unconscious.
The court heard that Wong was sent to hospital and had undergone brain surgery. He is now in a critical condition and medical staff said he may fall into a vegetative state, the Sing Tao Daily reported.
Principal Magistrate Bernadette Woo adjourned the hearing until August 2 to wait for the results of a further investigation by police as well as an update on Wong’s condition. Woo granted Shum bail of HK$300,000 (US$38,221) and asked for surety of another HK$300,000.
