An Indonesian exchange student was raped in front of her home in Rotterdam in the Netherlands on Saturday, suffering serious injuries.
On Saturday morning, the student was riding a bicycle and was on her way from Rotterdam Station to her home in Herman Bavinckstraat. When she stopped outside her residence, a man hit her with a chain as she was locking her bike and strangled her with it with he raped her, the Jakarta Globe and other media reported.
The student was seriously injured and was rushed to a hospital by neighbors. She is now in the intensive care unit. Witnesses confirmed the student was strangled with the chain during the attack, NL Times reported.
Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, the citizen protection director of Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, said the Indonesian Embassy in Den Haag will be coordinating with police in investigating the case.
“The citizen protection team at the Indonesian embassy will continue to provide assistance and coordinate with local authorities,” Iqbal said.
Rotterdam police have spoken to about 20 witnesses and have analyzed security footage to determine the identity of the assailant.
