A 60-year-old male was sentenced to 16 months in jail at the District Court on Monday after being convicted of causing the death of two pedestrians in Kowloon City, Kowloon last year.
Siu Yam Nam pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of an 85-year-old local woman and a 58-year-old Filipino domestic worker while he was driving a tourist coach for mainland visitors in July last year, Headline Daily reported.
The court earlier heard that the pair were struck by the vehicle as they crossed Ma Tau Kok Road at Pak Tai Street. They were then trapped beneath the coach and dragged for 30 meters when Siu stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.
Media reports said the Filipino maid had been in the employment of the elderly woman, who had difficulty in walking, for more than a decade. The pair were known to get along well, and at the time of their deaths were on their way to breakfast.
The defense lawyer pleaded for leniency as the defendant admitted the offence and had apologized to the victims’ families. He was deeply remorseful and had suffered nightmares since the accident happened.
Judge Amanda Woodcock, taking into consideration Siu’s almost accident-free driving record over 33 years, sentenced him to 16 months in jail and suspended his driving license for five years.
Dangggg, the life of two people is only worth 1 yr 4mth jail time!!! Makes me wonder why didn’t I during my divorce…..
