A 32-year-old woman was jailed for four weeks by a Singapore court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to one count of causing injury after she threw a potato into the face of her 31-year-old Indonesian maid in July last year.
Suhaeni Saleh, an Indonesian maid who moved to Singapore in August 2015 to become a domestic worker, was hired by Siti Faseha and worked at her employer’s apartment in Block 617A on Punggol Drive, Lianhe Zaobao (Singapore) reported.
The court heard that the ‘potato assault’ happened in the kitchen of the apartment on July 13, 2017, shortly after the maid returned from a market with fresh groceries. Faseha became angry with her maid because she discovered salted eggs had not been washed and potatoes were bought instead of onions, as she had instructed.
Despite the fact that the maid said nothing, her angered employer picked up a potato and threw it into Saleh’s face, causing her nose to bleed. The injured maid ran to the bathroom and her employer followed, apologized and helped her wash off the blood.
On July 20, the maid sought help at the Ministry of Manpower and her case was referred to police. An investigation showed that the maid’s employer had also pushed her head into a wall and slapped her on two separate occasions prior to the potato incident.
A district court judge on Wednesday said the dispute was trivial and the accused reacted disproportionately to the situation. Given that the employer regretted her actions immediately and paid compensation to the maid, the judge handed down a four-week jail sentence.
