A Filipino domestic worker has appealed for help in locating a woman who was caught by a surveillance camera making off with a handbag the maid had left in a shop in Central on Hong Kong Island on Sunday.

Domestic worker Milagros A Galvan, 49, said she had put her bag on a clothes rack in a ground-floor shop in the Euro Trade Centre on Des Voeux Road Central so she could read phone messages, but when she went to retrieve her bag, it had gone, sunwebhk.com reported.

The shopkeeper helped Galvan check the store’s surveillance camera footage, which showed a woman in a blue top wrapping the bag strap around her wrist before quickly moving away.

Galvan reported the apparent theft to the Central Police Station with the footage she had obtained from the shop.

Galvan, who has been working in Hong Kong for 24 years, said the bag contained important documents including her passport, her Hong Kong identity card and her employment contract. She had them with her as she needed to update her records with a bank.

Other items in the purple handbag included HK$2,000 (US$255) in cash, some coins, a bunch of keys, her bank passbook, her Octopus e-payment card, and a power bank.
