Two Indonesian men were jailed by a Singapore court on Thursday for allegedly smuggling cigarettes into the country by sea during the early hours of Wednesday.
At 1am on June 13, officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Police Coast Guard jointly raided a container barge at Brani Terminal, The Straits Times reported, citing an ICA statement.
A total of 133 cartons of contraband cigarettes liable for Goods and Services Tax (GST) estimated at S$16,535 (US$12,280) were intercepted.
The two Indonesians — Bahril, 28, and Naudin, 26 — were arrested for concealing and attempting to smuggle contraband cigarettes.
Bahril was deemed to have attempted to evade duty amounting to S$15,423 (US$11,454) while Naudin evaded duty of S$1,112 (US$826). The court sentenced Bahril to 14 weeks in jail, and Naudin to 10 weeks.
