A 38-year-old Filipina was sentenced to seven months jail by a court in Singapore on Monday after pleading guilty to stealing S$17,000 (US$12,737) worth of jewelry from her employer.
Defendant Balisi Shirley Martirez had been working for Tan Siew Kim, a female lawyer, as a domestic worker for four years, The Straits Times reported.
The maid allegedly cashed the stolen jewelry items over a period of 10 months to cover the medical bills of her father in the Philippines, but his condition was not disclosed.
She began to steal items from July last year but her thieving was only discovered on May 3 this year when the lawyer was browsing through her jewelry collection and shocked to find that most of the pieces had gone. They had an estimated value of S$17,000 (US$12,737).
In December 2017, Martirez stole a S$3,000 (US$2,248) diamond pendant with a white chain from Tan’s master bedroom.
In March this year, the maid took three gold bracelets worth S$6,000 (US$4,495), and on April 25 she took a chain with a green stone pendant valued at S$1,500 (US$1,124), plus a pair of diamond earrings worth S$2,500 (US$1,873).
A separate theft involving a S$300 (US$225) Seiko watch was also listed.
The maid pawned all the items for cash at Maxi-Cash shops, and fortunately, the owner Tan was able to recover all the missing items.

file case as well to the pawnshop?…they didn’t verify and didn’t wonder she’s only a helper..they didn’t think that the helper stole it from her employer?there’s an address and name of the emplyer why they didn’t informed the employer..?
How come the maxi cash did not wonder why this person has a lot of jewelries to pawn?And yet know that she is a helper because of work permit.
Jwellery shops should be on the alert when a maid comes to pawn expensive jwellery !
