A 48-year-old male employer was arrested for allegedly indecent assaulting his maid in an apartment in Sheung Shui in the New Territories on Wednesday.

At 11pm, a 24-year-old Filipina domestic worker called police, claiming she had been indecently assaulted in an apartment of Choi Yuen Estate, the Apple Daily reported.

Police went to the apartment and after an initial investigation arrested the male employer, a Chinese man surnamed Cheng. The crime investigation team at Tai Po Police Station is following up the case.

According to data gathered by the Mission for Migrant Workers in 2012, 58% of the 3,000 surveyed domestic workers in Hong Kong had faced verbal abuse in the form of name-calling, insults, accusations and threats, while 18% suffered physical abuse in the form of jabbing, hair pulling, slapping, shaking and kicking.

A total of 6% experienced sexual abuse, ranging from sexual slurs, touching or fondling to rape in the residence of their employers. Experts believe the figures represent only the tip of the iceberg as many victims are too scared or ill-informed to lodge complaints.
