The Philippine and Russian governments are working on a bilateral agreement on the protection of Filipino workers in Russia.

On Tuesday in Moscow, Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alan Peter Cayetano met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss drawing up an agreement that will ensure Filipinos are protected while working in Russia, Modern Diplomacy reported.

“We are interested in ensuring that Filipino workers who work in the Russian Federation are socially protected. Many of them were here through private companies, often without the necessary licenses,” Lavrov said.

Cayetano confirmed that the Russian government was willing to draft an agreement with the Philippine government, UNTV reported.

“I admire Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov for his positive response. In fact, they will rush the creation of a model employment contract that will help our fellow Filipinos in Russia,” Cayetano said.
