An Indonesian caregiver was charged with one count of desertion in Hsinchu county in Taiwan after she allegedly left an elderly wheelchair-bound man on a street five years ago and ran off.
At 10am on January 6, 2013, the caregiver named Uni, who had been hired to take care of the man, was said to have taken him to Chanye Road in Zhudong Township supposedly so he could enjoy some sunshine, The Liberty Times reported on Tuesday. However, she allegedly left him there alone and ran away.
The man, who was too frail from serious illness to take care of himself, intentionally fell on to the roadside and hoped that he would be seen by some passers-by. An hour later, he was found by his son, who called the police as he could not find the caregiver.
Uni was not arrested until this year. She told police that she did not leave the old man on street but took him to his wife’s home and then ran away while taking out the garbage. However, the man’s son insisted that Uni had left his father on the street.
Media said the woman would face a charge of desertion, but did not provide more details about the accused or the circumstances of her arrest.
