A Hong Kong woman who failed to pay her Filipino maid for two weeks while she was away on vacation, wrongly assuming that the maid would take a two-week holiday at the same time, was embarrassed to learn that in fact the domestic worker had stayed in the woman’s apartment continuing to do housework during the period.
Lagring, 36, said her employer had given her permission to leave the apartment while she was away on vacation in Canada, sunwebhk.com reported. However, Lagring stayed home and worked. When her employer came back, she told her maid she would not pay her for that two-week period as she thought Lagring was on leave too.
Lagring said her employer should have made it clear that she was supposed to take a leave instead of working.
“I cleaned the house, from the ceiling lamps, the walls, air-conditioner covers and filters, and I even washed the curtains,” Lagring said.
The employer was embarrassed over the misunderstanding and finally paid Lagring her salary of the two weeks.
In Hong Kong, many employers discuss their vacation plans with their domestic workers in advance so that their maids can use this as an opportunity to spend their annual leave in their home countries.

Nope , it’s not stated in the contract . Actually it’s on the law they are not allowed to swap or deduct it from your annual leave ‘coz the helper is entitled to get her leave in place of her origin ( w/c is home country ) it’s time we finish our 2 yrs. contract. If ur in doubt you are always free to ask any labor department nearer to you they are willing to help or send a mail to ur boss for clarification . Don’t be afraid to ask , must know who you want to approach .

Paano nmn kung ung amo on vacation for 5days..tas binigay n off un ng amo s katulong..pero bbyaran din ng katulong ng 5sundays….tama po b un??

Camoro exactly.in 2 yrs we under contract agreement and it doesn’t matter if the employers are in hk or not they are under obligation to pay their monthly dues to their worker, i wonder how many employers doesn’t understand that very simple immigration rule with regards of employment, or i guess they tend to ignore thinking that Filipinos are much ignorant than they when it comes to following the law their own government imposed..
Employer pls be considerate.it is our problem if u have tpur or vacations.this is a full contract and not partime.pay what is due to your maids

But even if the maid took her vacation while they are away, she is still entitled to receive her salary.

I’m so thankful sa lahat ng naging employers ko, with pay pa rin ako kahit na pinakamatagal pa nilang bakasyon eh 2months, syempre pag wala sila talagang lahat ng sulok ng bahay kailangang maglinis ,nakakahiya naman tumanggap ng sweldo na walang ginawa.

No employer in their right mind will ask their helper to leave the place where they are working when they ( employers) will go for a trip and thinking they are spared of paying the salary of the helper. The contract is for 2 years, it did not state that everytime the employer is away the salary stop. It is not the fault of the helper that they travel and the work load tantamount to unlimited top to bottom cleaning scrubbing everything just to make the employer happy.. one more if it is in the contract then that cintract is nothing ……and it is not even right to discuss it with the domestic helper that they should be not paid when they travel because it is unlawful…..
if my employer is on vacation, i do have my vacation as well. but its a vacation with pay too.
But even they will be sent for annual leave it is still paid annual leave,,go to labor department and ask them to explain to you what is your obligation to your maid ( just in case u really don’t understand)
Bakit ako tuwing umuuwi full pa rin ang salary ko pag balik ko,tapos si amo ko pa ang bumibili lagi ng ticket ko.sometimes 3 x akong umuwi sa isang taon.kahit di sila umaalis pag nagpapa alam akong umuwi ok agad sila.
