A Hong Kong woman worried that her five-month-old grandsons are not being cared for properly, and whose complaints to police earlier led to the arrest of the children’s teenage mother, now says the blame should lie with her own son, not her daughter-in-law.
The 50-year-old grandmother surnamed Shen says her son left his wife and twin babies unattended because he was obsessed with video games, and likes to go into mainland China to play them with his friends there, Apple Daily reported.
Shen had reported to the police on Tuesday that her grandsons were left unattended in a village house in Yuen Long, New Territories. Her 17-year-old daughter-in-law surnamed Yang was arrested for child abuse after Shen told the officers that the young mother had called her to tell her she needed to go to the mainland to look for her husband and could not take care of the babies.
Yang was later released on bail, and Shen now says the young mother should not be blamed for the irresponsibility of her husband.
Shen said her son, who is a part-time decorator, only works two to three days a weak and spends other days playing an online battle game called “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” with friends on the mainland. The man seldom comes back home to take care of his family.
Shen also accused her son of not contributing enough money to his family and spending it on gaming instead.
The man did not show up on Wednesday.
Shen said she had not intended to get her daughter-in-law in trouble. In fact, she praised the young mother for taking care of the babies while her son was nowhere to be found.
“I don’t blame her. She takes care of the babies alone and sometimes doesn’t even have time to eat,” Shen said, according to news website HK01.com.
Yang is a mainlander and has been staying in Hong Kong with a two-way entry permit to take care of her sons. It is understood that her permit is going to expire soon and she has to go back to the mainland for a renewal.
The baby boys are now in good condition in a hospital.
The Welfare Department has sent a social worker to contact the family to arrange any necessary assistance.
