A vessel that allegedly was carrying “slaves” has been captured in Indonesia after Interpol gave an alert to that country’s authorities.
On April 6, the authorities seized a vessel carrying 20 Indonesians, two Ukrainians and eight Russians who had allegedly been forced to work on board, Channel News Asia reported.
Achmad Taufiqoerrochman, deputy chief of the Indonesian Navy, said the people on board had their passports and travel documents confiscated when they boarded the ship a year ago and were not paid for their work.
“These Indonesians had been sailing for 10 months without being paid, so that’s why we suspect there was slavery happening,” he said.
The crew have been detained for questioning.
