An experimental theater performance featuring Indonesian migrant workers will be held at the 29th Macau Arts Festival, with its participants hoping to deepen people’s understanding of migrant workers through  their dialogues about their daily lives in the show.

One of the performers, Amamal Chusna, who has worked as a maid in Macau for 18 years, has joined the performance for the second time. She said she enjoyed it very much as she could tell the audience the story of Indonesian migrant workers through dancing, music and poems, Jornal Cheng Pou reported.

Amamal said she had worked in Hong Kong before but she liked Macau more.

Before coming to Macau, she thought the former Portuguese colony would have a high crime rate because of its many casinos. However, she later found that Macau was like her home town in Indonesia, a very comfortable place without the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong.

Amamal, 40, said Macau was now her second home.

Another performer, Gina Aweed, a 45-year-old mother of two who has been working in Macau for 10 years, said she was very happy that she could take part in the performance and have a great time with her compatriots.

Before becoming a maid in Macau, Gina was a garment worker. However, the family had to borrow a large sum of money from a bank because of a flood, so she wanted to become a domestic worker with a higher salary to help them pay their debts.

Gina said she had cleared all the debts and now she planned to work for two more years in Macau to earn more money so she could run a small store back home.

Gina said she liked Macau because nearly all of the local people are very nice.

The performance titled Migration, produced by the Macau Experimental Theatre, will be shown on May 5 and 6 during the 29th Macau Arts Festival.
