A 59-year-old Filipino who has worked for the same Singaporean couple for nearly three decades is considered an indispensable member of the family.

The Filipino maid’s 63-year-old employer and his 62-year-old wife, surnamed Liew, have high praise for Marcellina Gabon Castillo for her full dedication in raising their five children and now the grandchildren too, Shin Min Daily News reported.

Castillo who was one of 24 employees granted a Long Service Award by the Association of Employment Agencies (Singapore) for her remarkable service to the same family for more than 20 years – in her case, 29 years to be exact.

She says her employers see her as family, and so does she.

Liew said she saw Castillo as her daughter, who could read her mind and understand her needs even before she had to ask.

On top of being very observant, Castillo has been hard-working and eager to learn. For instance, for years the wife herself would prepare offerings for a complicated religious ritual, with Castillo only assisting. But one day, about 10 years ago, Liew came home and was impressed by a table of offerings set out in an orderly fashion.

“I thought it was rare good work by my husband, but it turned out it was Castillo who set the table all by herself,” Liew recalled, adding that she was an amazingly helpful worker.

Liew frankly told the reporter that there had been times when she wanted to find Castillo a boyfriend, but the Filipino politely declined every time.

“Though she is [now] 59, we will continue to employ her as long as she is willing to stay with us,” Liew said. “And if she plans to retire, we have prepared a sum of money that could help her kickstart some small business when she returns home to the Philippines.”
