While a new agreement has been negotiated to improve working conditions for Filipino domestic worker in Kuwait, a maid has claimed she was raped by her employer’s nephew in the Sabah Al-Ahamd area.

She reported the incident at the Mina Abdullah Police Station, Kuwait Local reported. Police are investigating the case.

The Philippines stopped sending domestic workers to Kuwait in January after a maid was found dead in a freezer. It was just one of many incidents that Manila called a pattern of abuse in the Gulf state.

However, on Friday the governments of both countries came to an agreement aimed at improving working conditions for Filipinos, the Arab Times reported.

The new agreement gives domestic workers the right to keep their passports and the right to refuse being transferred to other employers. It will provide greater protection for Filipino domestic workers.

“The deal will ensure the rights of both employers and employees,” said Sami Al Hamad, an undersecretary for Consulate Affairs in Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry.

Philippine labor secretary Silvestre Bello said the new agreement will be signed in two weeks in Kuwait, GMA News reported.
