An escalator broke down at a Mass Transit Railway station in Hong Kong after an Indonesian woman’s long dress got stuck in it on Sunday morning.
At 8am, the woman took the escalator connecting Exit C and the concourse of Diamond Hill MTR Station in Kowloon, but her dress got stuck in the gap between a step and an escalator comb plate, Oriental Daily reported.
She tried to pull her dress out but failed, and the accident triggered an emergency halt of the escalator’s operation.
No one was injured. MTR officials said staff shut down the escalator and replaced the damaged parts.
They advised passengers who wear long dresses, sandals or slippers to stand clear of the edges of MTR escalators.
Over the past few years, there have been a couple escalator-related accidents across the city and in mainland China.
Last year, one of the escalators at the Langham Place mall-cum-office building in Kowloon’s Mong Kok area malfunctioned, sending people crashing to the floor. In that incident, 18 people were injured, causing panic at the facility.
In 2015, a 30-year-old mother was killed by a defective escalator at a shopping mall in Jingzhou in central China’s Hubei province as the metal plate she stepped on collapsed.

As this is mandatory in all dh here in hk.. Tbh.. You are much lucky hongkongers because you have a full holiday in saturday and Sunday, and also can rest about an hour in you’re workplace. While as a dh we are not allowed to rest1 any single minutes.. And we work more than 16 hours. We never ever get any O.T. Payment.. That it suppose to be we only have to work 8 hours.. And yet you still complain to agencies..why dont you try our work and replace our position and let us know how hard it is.. Standing while4 day.. Plus get any repremands all the time..
Ohohhh,,, using.long.dress is probibited ????

Who is the they here, Virginia? Would you be willing to swear that you’ve never worn something that could catch in an escalator? Because Crocs catch. Heels catch. Handbags held down (epsecially with fringe! OMG the THEY that have FRINGE on their handbags are probably the worst) catch. Delete this racist comment or change your name.
shame on Asia Times for linking the woman’s nationality with this event. If it wasn’t obvious that this was dog-whistling against islamic women and other women who choose to dress modestly, I think the comments section will make that crystal clear.
thats their way of clothing coz most of them are muslims, its not their clothes matter its about safety,so just be carefull next time.
They are Muslims they wear dress like that so we cannot blame them, but of course, they should be aware too… Its a big reminder for them

Wearing a long dress, sweeping and mopping the ground while they are walking….????
My goodness! Im so taken beyond my wits reading these comments. These people castigated the lady as if they are so perfect and faultless. Instead of expressing sympathy and grateful that the lady was not harmed, they instead chose to blame her. How ignorant these people are!
Be creful when step at escalator must n proper position .
Esp.those at lane wd some hurry time to passby they mke as staircase and sudden blug u ..ho hoo hoo…
