Three men and a woman, all Taiwanese, have been charged with aggravated robbery after targeting migrant workers and allegedly threatening a Filipino woman with a toy gun and stealing her necklace worth NT$300 (US$10) in Miaoli county, western Taiwan, last September.

During the early hours of September 16, 2017, two pairs of masked persons riding on two motorcycles – a woman surnamed Wang and her boyfriend surnamed Cheng, and two men surnamed Chiu and Wang – looked for potential victims among female migrant workers in Hsinchu Science Park and Kuanyuan Science Industry Park, The Liberty Times reported.

Their first robbery attempt failed because the target had no money or valuables. She also managed to escape.

At 1:40am, the four took note of a Filipino woman who was walking alone near a convenience store on Youyi Road, Zhunan. The man named Wang allegedly pointed a toy gun at her and demanded money.

After learning that the victim had no money, Chiu allegedly ordered her to take off her necklace. Since the robbers outnumbered her, and she was in a quiet street where virtually no help could be sought, the victim gave in and handed them her necklace.

The victim filed a complaint with Datong Police Station of the Zhunan Precinct of the Miaoli County Police Bureau, where officers reviewed surveillance-camera footage and identified four suspects.

An hour later, the police arrested the four, who had stopped by the road as one of their vehicles had broken down. They reportedly told the officers that they had made robbery attempts merely for fun.

If convicted of of aggravated robbery, the suspects could face at least seven years in jail.
