Police are hunting for a burglar who broke into three apartments in Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island and made off with valuables worth about HK$340,000 (more than US$43,000) in total.
The burglar is believed to have gotten access to the apartments on Saturday by scaling bamboo scaffolding that had been erected outside for maintenance work at Shan Kwong Tower on Shan Kong Road, Apple Daily reported.
At 11pm, a 49-year-old woman who lives on the ninth floor of the building found that a window had been pried open and the apartment had been ransacked. She lost HK$5,500 in cash and jewelry worth HK$96,000.
An hour later, a 41-year-old woman who lives on the 12th floor also found that a window had been pried open and called the police. She said HK$5,000 in cash, 8,000 yuan (US$1,255), and a watch and jewelry worth a total of HK$159,000 had been stolen.
At 6am on Sunday, a male resident, who also lives on the 12th floor, reported that a window of his apartment had been pried open and HK$19,000 cash and HK$50,000 worth of jewelry were lost.
No one has been arrested yet. Police classified the cases as burglaries. A crime unit from Wan Chai Police Station is following up.
