Three asylum seekers were sentenced to at least 15 months in prison at Sha Tin Magistrates Court on February 8 for working illegally in Hong Kong, according to a government statement published on Friday.
A 24-year-old Pakistani man caught by police and officers from the Immigration and Labor departments on February 5 as he was handling goods in a warehouse in Kwun Tong, Kowloon.
Separately, immigration officers investigated two cases of illegal employment in January and February after receiving referrals from the police. The officers arrested a 44-year-old man from Bangladesh and a 23-year-old man from Pakistan as they were conveying goods in Kwun Tong district.
Two employers suspected of hiring illegal workers were arrested, and that investigation is ongoing.
Asylum seekers are prohibited from taking any employment, whether paid or unpaid, during their stay in Hong Kong.
