The 30-year-old KMB bus driver involved in the weekend’s fatal traffic accident at Tai Po, in Hong Kong’s New Territories, appeared at Fanling Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.

The driver, surnamed Chan, appeared in court looking tired and had his head down most of the time, according to Apple Daily. He was not required to take a plea and was remanded in custody. Principal Magistrate Ernest Lin said the case was very serious and rejected a request for bail raised by Chan’s lawyer.

A prosecutor said police officers had taken statements from 28 passengers discharged from hospitals, but that statements remained to be taken from 30 passengers and other potential eyewitnesses.

Autopsy reports were not yet ready. According to RTHK, investigators need more time to examine the wreckage of the bus and analyze the vehicle’s tachograph, or “black box.”

Prosecutors said they were considering laying a more serious charge against Chan, pending legal advice. He will return to the court on April 10.

Nineteen passengers died and 65 people were injured in the traffic accident, which happened on Saturday evening.

As of Monday, 36 injured passengers remained in hospitals. Six were said to be in critical condition, seven in serious condition, with the rest stable.

The government has announced that the Lunar New Year fireworks intended for this Saturday have been called off out of respect for the victims.
