The Philippine Embassy in Kuwait has denied rumors circulating on social media that those who want to hire a Filipino domestic worker may do so through the embassy in exchange for a payment of 600 dinars (US$2,000).

On Friday, the embassy issued an advisory warning the public that the rumors on social media and circulating through text messages are not true.

The rumors started circulating on January 29, which was the first day of an amnesty period during which Filipinos who are in Kuwait illegally can go home and escape penalties, Arab Times reported.

The embassy said it had informed the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior and Office of Domestic Workers Affairs of the false rumors.

Last month, the Philippine government suspended the deployment of new workers to Kuwait because of the increasing number of abuse cases in the Middle Eastern country.

President Rodrigo Duterte also threatened to pull all Filipino workers out of Kuwait if there is another case of abuse or rape of a domestic worker.

There are about 165,000 Filipino domestic workers in Kuwait.
