A 31-year-old Filipino man pleaded guilty in the Judiciary Council of Macau on February 14 to setting seven motorbikes on fire while he was drunk.
The defendant surnamed Mendoza, who is a chef, pleaded for leniency, telling the judge that he regretted to what he did, Macao Daily News reported.
The judge adjourned the sentencing and the defendant was remanded in custody.
Earlier, the court heard that on August 20 the defendant got drunk at home then went to an alley on Rua Dois do Bairro Iao Hon at 4am and set fire to seven motorcycles parked there. The fire spread to a van parked nearby and a shop was also affected. Some 20 people living nearby had to be evacuated, although no one was injured.
The defendant told the judge that he had expressed deep regret for his behavior, adding that he could not afford to compensate the seven motorcyclists now but he promised to pay the compensation by instalments.
Owners of the seven motorcycles attended the court and told the judge what models they owned and what they were worth. Some victims told the court no compensation was needed.
