Two Filipinos have been arrested at Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport for allegedly stealing 300,000 yen (US$2,761) from a trader at the Taiwan Jewellery and Gem Show in November.
Leonor Martinez, 37, and Nathaniel Alfelor, 64, were detained after customs officers at the airport identified them as suspects in the robbery, Taiwan News reported. Police said in November they had identified five suspects, who had all left Taiwan.
The suspects’ names were put on a watchlist at the airport.
Taipei District Prosecutors Office said Martinez and Alfelor admitted during questioning on Monday to having stolen the money from a Japanese trader at the show. However, they denied being involved in another robbery at the same event, when gemstones valued at NT$255 million (US$8.76 million) were stolen.
