The parents of an 11-year-old boy were given a 12-month probation order on Tuesday at the Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Court for neglecting the care of a child after they left their son in Hong Kong while taking a five-day trip to Thailand.
The 50-year-old father and 36-year-old mother pleaded guilty to one count of ill treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person, Sing Tao Daily reported.
The court heard that the parents were in Thailand from October 14 to 18. The boy was left at home in Po Tat Estate in Kowloon’s Kwun Tong area with an allowance of HK$700 (US$89).
However, he didn’t go to school on October 16 and 17, leading a school social worker to pay a visit to his home and discover that the boy was alone.
The court also heard that the mother has substance-abuse issues, Apple Daily reported.
The defendants’ lawyer pleaded for leniency, saying the boy was not hurt and the parents sent messages from time to time during their trip overseas. They were full of regret over their acts, the court was told.
The magistrate said it was fortunate that the boy did not suffer any physical harm. As the mother had enrolled voluntarily in a drug rehabilitation program, the magistrate agreed to a 12-month probation order.

Corrected is needed but not insulted.
