A Filipino maid who refused to renew her contract with her Hong Kong employers was reportedly forced to overwork and eventually fell ill with tuberculosis.
In September, the domestic worker named Warren B told her employers that she would not renew her contract because of her unfavorable health situation, sunwebhk.com reported, without disclosing her age.
Her employers then started increasing her workload, telling her that she had to finish all of her work before going to bed.
Most days, she was unable to get any sleep until 3am and had to get up just a few hours later. The earliest time she was able to get to bed was 11pm. She became exhausted by her heavy workload and lack of sleep.
On October 15, a fellow domestic worker noticed Warren had difficulty breathing, was coughing frequently and had a high fever. She took Warren to Queen Mary Hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with tuberculosis.
After suffering from high fever and coughing for 10 days, she was transferred to Grantham Hospital in Aberdeen on October 25. She was confined to the hospital until her health improved.
She received medical treatment for a month and was finally able to leave the hospital on November 14. With her employment contract now expired, she could finally return to her home in Cebu in the Philippines, which she did immediately after being given clearance that she was fit to travel.
In Hong Kong, employers or employees are required to give a one-month notice if they want to terminate an employment contract or the contract is going to expire.

so you are telling me that the enployer found a way to overwork a maid in hk’s small houses? What could you possibly be doing
Jason Ang , i fill shame n pity of you. You are a “poor guy” n how can you educate your descendent…
Better all abuses employer on block list than lots of helper suffering in them!
Jason Ang napaka Ang Ang m she got to it simply bcos her immune system was been weak more than a week coughing have few consequences first it will cause pneumonia, brocho pneumonia and some other related illness so since she was suffering more than a week coughing without any proper medication was given maybe, and still doing all the task that employer gave to her of course it will be worsen keep coughing may cause scratch to her lungs and that then tuberculosis will develop. Try to read sometimes and broaden your knowledge before you insist your own stupid opinion.
Jason Ang..it could be the poor ventilation inside the house, FYI most domestic helper are sleeping with a cube box room with damp clothing hanging for drying and clothes drying machines..I Google the consequences of the drying machines inside the maids room without proper ventilations could caused certain kind of sickmnes , unfortunately that’s what she acquired..I’m only speculating because the terrible heat of the machines Without the window ..since employers concern more of the machine so it’s facing only by the window on maids room ..and many other aspects.
She was sick then sir,it might got worst when she doesn’t have enough sleep and overworked… you put your feet in our shoes and tell us how does it feel….
Jason Ang, try to learn and educate ur self before u start commenting, coz obviously ur words speak volume about you..
Gago din ipagpilitan paniniwala nya eh over worked nga c kabayan at la maayos n tulog kya nagkasakit d makaintindi.Subukan kya nya iover worked sarili nya at d matulog ng maayos kng d manghina immune system nya bka mas malala pa sa TB makuha nya n sakit.
Jayson Ang read this one
So it’s stated there that the helper is already unfavorable health condition and you add also the overload work given by the employer. Do you think the helper condition will be worsen or she will feel better. It’s common sense! Once your health condition is not doing good and you do more over workload your immune system will be weaken and that may lead to tuberculosis. Just saying!
Jason Ang u better shut up,obviously u are not knowledgeable of your words and with the disease!
Jason Ang, because of over worked and lack of sleep, her IMMUNE SYSTEM deteriorated gradually and "maybe" she was slightly ill before, like "maybe" she had a simple cough until it got worst and because she did not have enough rest, it led the simple cough to TB. And she worked almost 21 hours a day in 2 years.
U must really be stupid.it wasn’t the helper who diagnosed herself with TB.it was the hospital.tell that to ur fellow Chinese who diagnosed here.
Jason Ang If you dont agree with our opinion but always agree with your google thing I must say to you- you have brain but you dont have that heart of kindness and humanity ! Were you one of these kind of employers here in HK?your reaction defines you sir!
mr.jayson ang,you are not educated about the condition of a healthy life style, number one cause of tuberculosis, stress from work, over fatigue, lack of sleep, you try to research you you can fully get the answer!
Jayson ang read the article again and again so that you will understand,or should i help to explain?the helper said she doesn’t want to renew her contract due to her unfavorable health conditon,so that means she is already sick"ALREADY"then she was forced to do loads of work(overwork)by her employer. She was axhausted n lack of sleep every night, take note ha OVERWORK EVERYDAY N LACK OF SLEEP EVERY NIGHT,now how can you say what is the relevance of tuberculosis in overwork? If you know the meaning of tuberculosis then you should know the signs and symptoms of it.Now answere this question. What are the signs and sypmtoms that causes tuberculosis?kung mka relevance relevance ka jan,
try to overwork for many months and let us see if your claim is correct.
Who told you? one of the main reason why you havf t.b. is lack of sleep, overfatigue, and non-nutritous food that you eat
lack of sleep and overworked will end up tuberculosis.
kaya nga…buti nalang tumahimik na siya ha!ha!ha!
