A Filipino man was refused bail by Hong Kong’s High Court on December 6 after overstaying his visa for 19 years.

Manuel C. Sy Jr. was discovered to have overstayed his visa after being arrested some weeks ago for stealing HK$54 (US$7) worth of items from a supermarket on Hong Kong Island, sunwebhk.com reports.

Sy arrived in Hong Kong in 1998. His mother, who is a permanent resident in the city, applied to keep him in Hong Kong as a dependant but her application was rejected by the Immigration Department. The reason is unknown.

The judge at Sy’s High Court hearing refused to post bail. Sy faces trial in Sha Tin Court on December 21 for breaching condition of stay.
