Hong Kong’s consumer watchdog received 182 complaints against domestic worker employment agencies in the first 11 months of the year.
The Consumer Council reported a list of problems, including unreasonable service fees, false resumes and refunds, Sky Post reported.
In one case, an employer recruited a domestic worker to take care of her two children but she resigned after three days.
The employment agency then refused to refund the employer, who was forced to spend an additional HK$70,000 (US$8,960) for a stand-in child minder before rehiring another domestic worker.
Another case involved a maid, who after passing her medical check-up, was unable to perform her duties because she was pregnant.
“It is very difficult for employers to verify the accuracy of the information that agencies provide, like qualifications and experience or even medical reports,” Chan Kam-fa, a spokesperson for a domestic helper employer rights group, told HK01.com.
But the biggest concern was when domestic workers hide health problems from their employers, she stressed.
Chan pointed out that the group received between five to six complaints every year about domestic workers diagnosed with tuberculosis after having overseas medical check-ups.
One employer even revealed that she found her maid had been diagnosed with syphilis.
Chan criticized the government for failing to support employers during the recruitment process and advised them to carefully select employment agencies.

lol…. if 2-3 times… i dont think the problem here is the dh… why would someone under ur employment will want to.leave if you really treat them right and just?? i been with my employer for 10mos…. 10months of suffering from emotional and physical stress… plus her verbal blah blah blah…. but still, I never break my contract! HIRE ME THEN! haha
treat your maid good she will treat you better.. i clean before i take my day off, i wash the dishes too, , treat your maid better , she will treat you the best of her own capabilities witout murmuring but joy n commitment..
Oh realy, dont you ever think why helpers quit thier job and choose to find new job or employer? Bcoz they are not happy working with you, there is no reason for helper to quit there job if employers treat them well. And for your i formation we also pay pay huge agency fee to get new one i think its fair..

filipinos are hardworking ….dedicated to our work ….we have patience that even we are already facing too much problems with our work we are still trying to do our best to achieve the most of it….but there are really employers who are taking for granted of how their helpers doing their tasks…they dont care of how their helpers taking it….some emplyers are so mean….they treat their helpers like a rug….these are just some of the reasons why helpers leaving their employers so maybe one these if not all ahy your helpers left you Naveen Sadwani
Arnel N. Batoon. Every story with helpers or employeer I’ve seen it all the time I’ve tried helping friends (helpers) then I’ve helped too Employer. But really you couldn’t find a match to both together good maid good employeer ist very seldom you get this together. Some times you get good employers then the helpers take advantage because the employers too kind too good. The helpers start using employers private stuff like perfumes and clothes they wear and they trying this without knowing the employer… Hellooo I’ve seen it all I I’m not saying all helpers doing this. But I’ve seen it all. I’ve witnessed it all. After being in Hong Kong for more than 35 years. You very seldom you get to match together the good maid the good employers. Only a few. Every one in this planet every one of us never be happy. Do you all know life can be so simple if you all try to treat one another to be just human beings. If you Give food to helpers treat them well still still some of them they still take you for granted…. There’s no such things or words good maid good employer’s… Look around us. None of us really are perfect or contented in life. Every one is complaining even if they have good maid or good employer’s they still take each other for granted…. That’s how it is… No one is happy no one is content with a simple life. Life is simple if you all want to Make it happen…. If You don’t get a helpers life is difficult. Then if the helpers there’s no job life is difficult no money to send. If we don’t have a bus driver we won’t get to our destination. Why we we people’s are really not content with things in life???? We are all the same. At the end of the day… We are Dust after all… Be kind. just be a human beings. make everything good and be kind and life is simple if we try….
No housemaid will keep on working with an INCONSIDERATE, METICULOUS, NOISY AND CRAZY EMPLOYERS! Some might finish their contract but that’s it! No way to renew with those kind of employers. We’re here to work as a domestic HELPER to earn money,NOT to be a SLAVE ,get crazy or worst …die!
F you are a good employer you then you can have a good employee ten folds
Some of the new comer suffered culture shock because of big differences, from food, time of sleep, and everyday work routine.and the other one is the homesickness.. here in hk time is gold, but in philipines times is very slow because of nothing to do. No work and plain housewife.so the mind and body shock for sudden change. Thats why some can’t survive.
If you are good enough to your maid/maids, then there’s no reason to leave. Just like me, i don’t need a high salary as long as the employer is good, strick but reasonable, and offcourse!it has concern to his/her maid specially in times of sickness.
There’s no perfect in this world. Only have to do is to be nice, humble and do good to your fellow man either rich or poor and either maid or employer. We’re all equal in the eyes of God. Remember everything in this world is just temporary.
Mr.Naveen,I think the problem is in your family no helper will leave u if u treat them will did u give her proper food,proper room to rest,enough time to rest and sleep atleast she finished at 8 or 9pm working because she need ro wake up early n the morning d nxt day..Salary+bonus anything that make your helper happy even she is tired working the whole day.Nagging is irritating make the helper unhappy.Pls.check how u treat ur helper.
Do you think it’s easy to find another job if the helper was break contract or terminated? I’m with my employer for 16 years their nationality is Indian but they are very good employer that is the reason I Do not hesistate to renew my contract again and again.try to asked your self and your wife why your helper Can not stayand work with your family for longer time.
maybe its time for you to ask your self why your helper prefer to find another job than staying with you for 2 years contract?
And it is also not right if you have 2 helpers that break their contract and find a new employer can’t you see what’s wrong because you can’t accept to yourself that maybe there is something wrong with your attitude towards to yuor helper the immigration have.to.look after too to those kind of abusive employer
I would like to let you know in so many cases of abuses between the employer and employee(hired dh),it’s always the employee who got abuses.Let me tell this I came here 2001when I fisnished my 2 contracts to my employer Iook for a new employer I had some interviews from the same nationality you had(I assume your an Indian)but after the interview I’m telling to myself nope I dont want this employer you know why they are giving so many rules like I can go out only at this time of the day every day off not early than that,I have to go back at 8 pm because they are having dinner.in the house,so for.only those things it is really double bladed edge for us domestic worker it was stipulated in the contract that our holiday is 24hours but in reality some.employer doesn’t really follow what is in the contract
If maid felt uncomportable inside the house of employer especially the attitude of employer she really find ways or excuses how to get away from that kind of employer. For me to deal between employer and maid so easy! If the employer treat good to us 100% we give back those kindness esp in our food! We must have at least a meal that can be survive to us to work the whole day til night and second rest time.Employer must think also the maid not just giving work loaded. We are human also we know how to get tired of it. Also if the employer so annoying maids also cannot survive… Employers must be humanely to us!!!!!!
