Hong Kong’s consumer watchdog received 182 complaints against domestic worker employment agencies in the first 11 months of the year.
The Consumer Council reported a list of problems, including unreasonable service fees, false resumes and refunds, Sky Post reported.
In one case, an employer recruited a domestic worker to take care of her two children but she resigned after three days.
The employment agency then refused to refund the employer, who was forced to spend an additional HK$70,000 (US$8,960) for a stand-in child minder before rehiring another domestic worker.
Another case involved a maid, who after passing her medical check-up, was unable to perform her duties because she was pregnant.
“It is very difficult for employers to verify the accuracy of the information that agencies provide, like qualifications and experience or even medical reports,” Chan Kam-fa, a spokesperson for a domestic helper employer rights group, told HK01.com.
But the biggest concern was when domestic workers hide health problems from their employers, she stressed.
Chan pointed out that the group received between five to six complaints every year about domestic workers diagnosed with tuberculosis after having overseas medical check-ups.
One employer even revealed that she found her maid had been diagnosed with syphilis.
Chan criticized the government for failing to support employers during the recruitment process and advised them to carefully select employment agencies.

Whos the stupid helper will cheat u that kind way..firstly helper before they coming here they are lots of sacrifices including a lot of financial jut to got a job..then when they come here you said they cheat you n find a new employer again that absolutely a big lie.if you treat your helper nice at the first day of her emloyment theres no stupid helper find complicated life here in hk..just ask yourself ..only u can answer that, might be ur a problem.if you do so no need to hire a helper just do it by yourself.
If the employers are kind there is no reason why the helper want to leave.
70 000 hkd for hiring domestic helper?…isn’t it too exaggerated?…I’ve been here for a decade and I’ve never heard employer pays such amount just to hire a helper..the least I’ve known is 10k maximum ..and btw..we domestic helper FYI never came here free of expenses. We are also entitle to pay on their Phil counterpart agency at least 50-60k pesos.
I’d rather praised the legitimacy of my agency because upon arrival in HK we are obligated to go thru thorough medical checkup before getting in to the employers home ..
If thats the case sir maybe you should find out whats the really problem at your home. Maybe you are not the problem but how about the rules and treatment of your wife to your helper?
Brando Cayambas
I agree with u madam/sir
Because if they treated as a family member Then the helper won’t find another employer.. Because finding new it not free for us.. We must pay again…
One more thing that HK government also must check all employer records and if the employer have 3 and more break contract DH will not qualify to get a new helper. In your case Miss/Mr. Naveen _ the worker is not the problem but its you. Give u an example, my friend taking care of 3 kids in one employer for almost 6 years, I had 3 friends 10 yes, 16 yes and 22 yrs in one employer and no negative feedback from them regarding their employer. Its time for u to shine and look forward on what you need to change or adjust. WORKER IS NOT A PROBLEM BUT ITS YOU. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL
the point to all DH please don’t sign contract with india people
i was hear for my frinds ,before the employer in india … her employer is to much complint especially for making food and cleaning and she finish working everyday is verry late on 1 am or 2 am . …. n my theacher singapore also tell me that also heppen in singapore, most of india employer there also suck like that …
And how about the agency falsificated the signature of the helper just to process the papers and when the helper found it out they just answer "I don’t know how". Is this ok?
Excuse me Naveen three helpers quitted from you that’s means there is a problem and it’s not from the maid maybe how you treat your helper is the problem……no helper will break a contract if employers are good….so don’t make excuses to cover up the problem……
If you are good and treat your helper nicely,no helper will not go and find a new one…..it’s just the saying treat me right and I will serve you right….
Treat your helper as part of your family so she could stay and serve your family longer.
Naveen Sadhwani, there is no such thing like u treating ur maid humanely yet they still quit and leave u hanging. U claimed this happens to u 3 times, have u ever asked urself why those previous maids dont like u? As a maid myself, its not easy for us to break our contract and try to find a better one. Some maids just go on with their contract eventhough they are treated like s**t because its hard to find another employer specially when break contract. So please, stop telling HK Government have to protect employers too cos Government already doing. What i suggest u need to do is: try to encourage employers like u to undergo trainning how to treat maids humanely first before hiring a maid.. I’m so lucky cos this time i found the best employer
3maids quitted, meaning there’s something wrong with you.why would they quit, find another employer and spend more than 7k dollars up for another placement fee if they are treated well…
Well the problem is you not the maid
Naveen sadhwani first of all if you treat your maid in a nice way then she still don’t want to stay or work with you then your helper is something problem with her. But there is nothing story like what u have telling now ok. True your comment the problem is you ok, where you can see a maid who’s still looking another mployer if her mployer is good to her ryt. Ask yourself first before you complain.
Treat your maid well for her to stay long and long work.for you give her enough food and dont nag always..ask.her whats the problem.
Well i think the problem is you bieng an employer if your maid break the contract 3x its not the maid who is the problem here.if you treat your maid very well of course the maid will not break her contract that simple
I think if you treat your helper humanely then. They will have any reason to leave. Employers should stop making excuses… Maltreatment of DH is more of a problem here.
Always yan as mga amo
