Cryptocurrency exchanges Bitfinex and Coinbase’s gdax.com both experienced service outages on Tuesday, Reuters is reporting, in one case confirmed to be due to hackers.
Bitfinex tweeted on that it was under heavy distributed denial of service (DDoS), causing the interruption of service.
We are currently under heavy DDOS. API is also down. We are working on further mitigation.

Wallet-provider Coinbase’s website reportedly displayed a “service unavailable” message, though it said it was down for maintenance. Its exchange gdax.com said it was experiencing a “minor service outage.”
There have been at least three dozen heists on cryptocurrency exchanges since 2011, according to Reuters, and experts say they are becoming more vulnerable as valuations rise.
Last Thursday, Slovenian cryptocurrency mining marketplace NiceHash said it lost US$64 million worth of bitcoin in a single hack.
