Hong Kong Disneyland may suspend its signature fireworks display in January because of expansion work. Sources were quoted as saying by Apple Daily that the 12-minute “Disney in the Stars” fireworks show above the Sleeping Beauty Castle would be suspended in early January because of construction work on a bigger castle in the area.
The park has already begun scaling down the fireworks show, the sources added. The number of shipping materials for the displays were reduced six months ago. Staff also started to dismantle the launch devices.
The newspaper’s reporter observed onsite that some small-scale fireworks had been cut during the show.
The HK$10.9 billion (US$1.4 billion) expansion project of Hong Kong Disneyland started last month and will be completed in different phases from next year through 2023.
An interactive show about the Disney character Moana will be launched next May and Frozen Land will be ready in 2019.
The theme park launched an online lucky draw to offer free tickets to Hong Kong residents last week. Around 900,000 people have registered so far. Registrations will be accepted online until Thursday.
