Employers of foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong are planning to organize a petition and a demonstration to oppose the lifting of the “live-in” rule for maids.
Joan Tsui, convenor of the Support Group for HK Employers with Foreign Domestic Helpers, said most employers worried that workers would become lazy or could not perform well if they live separately, Headline Daily reported.
Working parents who greatly depend on maids to take care of their children in the morning worried the most if the maid would be late for work, she said.
Some employers also worried that their workers would want to do another part-time job illegally after work.
Tsui believed that if the “live-in” requirement was cancelled, domestic workers who live out for a long period of time in Hong Kong would have solid evidence for them to apply for permanent residency.
Tsui predicted that at least 100,000 of the 350,000 maids in the city would choose to live separately, and there was the risk of large-scale redundancies happening if the choices between employer and maid were different.
The live-in rule was introduced in 2003 and implemented via standard employment contracts and pledges when workers apply for visas.
The Hong Kong High Court heard in October a judicial review filed by a Filipino domestic worker against the “live-in” rule, alleging that it forces the workers to be on call 24 hours a day and puts them in a risk of being abused.
Barrister Albert Luk Wai-hung said the ruling on the judicial review would have a great impact on society. He predicted that the side that loses the case will appeal, which means it may not be settled for two to three years.

Dependent kasi masyado sa katulong… Takot malate?o takot malugi sa sahod… Wow..become lazy… Yung tipong di kami pwed magpahinga matulog dahil gising pa sila… Tapos ginigising kapag trip nila… Ayaw nyo maging residente mga matagal na nagwowork dto dahil magmamahal na sweldo nila… Dont us.hhahahahha
The only thing employers in HK are worried about is that their 24-hour slaves would become regular workers as everybody else. Why don’t these ’employers’ spend 24 hours per day at their workplace as well, if they like it so much?
Hk employers are very much dependent on their helpers- from the time they wake up til the time they go to bed.
If employers are worried their helpers are gonna be late coming to work the next day- what is the difference if their helper is late in waking up because they hadn’t had enough sleep the night before because they had to work til wee hours of the night just because they are "live- in"?
Hk employers are just scared their helpers wont be around for those little things they can’t and wont do for themselves
I need rest not a part-time, all of us knows before we enter here the roles which is illegal and not.so it’s for you to do so.
Many of them (employers) afraid of loosing their dependency to their workers. Coz if the worker live separately they can’t call out for help during night time (ha ha ha) why do they think only their side? What about our side? Most of you ( employers doesn’t know how to be considerate. You have treated as like a slave and it seems like you already owned us because of the salary you’re giving us monthly. You (employers) work overtime and you got paid off. And not thinking your workers long hours of working. And take note NO PAY… It’s free!!!
WHY THE FUSS ABOUT LIVE OUT RULE? ITS ACTUALLY GOOD FOR THE HELPER AND EMPLOYER CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT THE HELPER WILL BE OF GOOD HEALTH AND THAT EMPLOYERS WILL NOT WORRY OF THEIR ACCOMMODATION ESPECIALLY IF THE FLAT IS TOO SMALL TO INCLUDE A HELPER.
IF THE EMPLOYERS WORRY OF THEIR HELPERS GETTING LATE TO WORK THEN WHY NOT IMPOSED AN AGREEMENT WITH THE HELPER TO BE CONSISTENT WITH HER WORKING TIME ETHICS?
REGARDING THE WORRY OF THEIR HELPER TO DO PART TIME JOBS AFTER THEIR WORK, WAS IT NOT IN THE CONTRACT AGREEMENT THAT SUCH PART TIMING IS PROHIBITED BY THE LAW? AND IF SHE(HELPER) DO IT DESPITE KNOWING THE LAW THEN ITS NOT THE EMPLOYERS ACCOUNTABILITY RIGHT?
LET THE HELPERS HAVE LIFE AND AT THE SAME TIME GOOD REST FOR THEM TO BE EFFICIENT WORKERS OF YOUR HOUSEHOLD.
And some of the employers let their helpers sleep in the kitchen too.
Or we have room but looks like a storage, just a bed and little space to walk in and out the rest iall there things
Yes its true when we finished our work it is 9 sometimes 10pm how can we go work part time? When we cannot almost walk from exhausting ourselves the whole day we also need rest!
Ito po ung part na basis Ng comment kopo…"Tsui believed that if the “live-in” requirement was cancelled, domestic workers who live out for a long period of time in Hong Kong would have solid evidence for them to apply for permanent residency."
True
Unreasonable..living out will make helpers look for part time job after work? When is the time we have a chance to have a part time after our work? 1-6 am?
But lucky me my Bosses are kind ,I have my room, and finish early my duty , just feeling sorry to my co Filipino ,hoping that God enlighten the heart and mind of the employer to give their enough space for their helper to have a rest at night.
Employers should be honest to their self ,some employer their lazy to help or assist their kids to woke up in the morning cause their still in bed .They signed a contract maid have their room but when you start to work with them you find out ,sleep in the kitchen or in living room.
Selfes mga intsik na mga i2 sarli lng nla iniisp nla as long as bnbyran ka ala ng paki kainis
I never had interest for residents I love my country.
they worried bcoz most of them are dependent to their helper they can’t do it by their own.
I prefer for live out so that we spend exact time for work and take more time for our rest hours unlike live in as long as the employer’s awake we can’t sleep too
Chezy mga chekwa nag iisip b kayo mas marami nga wala room n katulong nagmamagaling p kyo
That means maids have no right to apply for residency??? It’s another ground of fear or descrimination?
