China aims to create a new form of cultivated land protection that emphasizes quantity, quality and ecology, the 21st Century Business Herald reported, citing an announcement made by the Ministry of Land and Resources at a national conference.

The conference, held in Nanjing city, Jiangsu Province, from November 13-14, was focused on the deployment of current and future cultivated land protection work.

Since the 18th National Congress, the conference has proposed six directions for the protection of cultivated land under the strategy of rural rejuvenation.

Analysts pointed out that under the two strategic backgrounds of rejuvenating the country and tackling poverty, the protection of cultivated land will be given new tasks.

The conference revealed that since the 18th National Congress, a total of 1.55 billion mu of permanent basic farmland has been demarcated throughout the country, with a total of 480 million mu of high-standard farmland and more than 24 million mu of newly-added cultivated land, with a farmland output rate increasing by 10% – 20%.

In terms of reform and helping the poor, while optimizing the system of land expropriation, the meeting stated that various localities have implemented the policy of compensation for land expropriation and set up a nationwide public platform for land expropriation information sharing.

Over the past five years, more than 5,200 land improvement projects have been arranged in poor areas with a construction scale of more than 61 million mu and a total investment of 94 billion yuan (US$14.19 billion), the report said.
