An employer has warned citizens in Singapore to beware of taxi drivers ripping off foreign workers after learning his maid was overcharged for a ride from Tampines to Punggol.
The maid’s employer surnamed Cho wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday afternoon that his maid arrived home by taxi needing to pay S$10 (US$7.30) more than he had estimated for the ride, Shin Min Daily News reported over the weekend.
Earlier that day, the maid was handed S$20 by Cho, who wanted his maid to be able to take a taxi home after sending his elderly father to Changi General Hospital in Tampines.
However, the receipt the maid obtained showed the driver had travelled 26.5 kilometers and charged her S$23.70 for the 48-minute trip.
A reporter who investigated this said the concerned route should be about 14.6 kilometers and should take 24 minutes and cost S$13.38.
Some netizens replied to Cho, saying the maid might have said the name of her destination wrongly – or she might have dropped by to meet someone before going home.
The employer dismissed both claims, saying he had full trust in his worker, and she was given a note with the names of locations.
So, Cho filed a complaint to the taxi company, stressing he did not mean to get the concerned driver fired but wanted to highlight taxi malpractice because it was a matter of honesty.

Joesette Mabaga you’re definitely correct! I have been taking grab eversince so i have not been charge extra for any of my rides.price is fixed via grabpay or in cash.

Rowena Caoile when u book grab or uber it stated their price where is ur destination it is fixed already before u take it. And sometimes high fares due to high demands. And with in 2 mins. It lower down. I used grab everytime i send and fetch the 2 kids. And i experienced grab driver ran away when he saw my 2 kids.. hehehe because he dont have a booster seat. And i complaint to my ma’am and we understand why like that. Then we bought booster pack and mifold. It is troublesome for me. But nothing to do i need to carry it everytime i fetch them. .. and grab is more convenient for me.. and drivers are friendly.
Its happened to me once too.From Sheng Shiong Tanglin Halt commonwealth i flag blue taksi behind taxi stand in sheng shiong there to Swettenham Close opposite to#49 holland rd go inside the traffic light all the way to my employer house Swettenham Close i paid S$18+.As usual when i take taxi same company(blue color) same place to same destination i paid $5.25 only.So im very shock when i paid the taxi fare.
It happen to me also last August 24,2017…from UWCSEA DOVER to Changi airport..charge me 42 dollars….I always take taxi twice a year going airport to take holiday…I always pay 26 dollars…
That’s why it’s better to take Grab or Uber where the fare is fixed and there are no hassles. Not all taxi drivers but the few who do give the others a bad name.
Every time when I book a taxi, the driver usually like to ask which directions I would like to take! This is not necessary actually. The driver should always take the shortest route possible. When u are unsure, dishonest drivers will usually take a longer route to your destination! It is best to goggle first next time n know which direction to take before getting into a cab.

Oh no…we used grab pay all the time we need taxi and the amt we pay is not fixed ! i have all the receipt kept and even write it down for summary to show my boss .correct me if am wrong …but i guess not

Its happened to me when im still travelling by taxi from somerset to woodlands…i was pregnant and im in horrible pain, i took a taxi and told to the uncle driver to drop me at woodlands to meet up my husband to go back to jb…and this uncle driver rounding in bukit timah….i was shocked and told him uncle i always travel by taxi and this is not the way to go to woodland if u just want me to pay more just let me know uncle.im in pain uncle and im pregnant thats why i need to rush back to jb i told him…the uncle look at me and apologize….and he drove me to woodland safely…Hopefully this uncle will change his attitude…
it happen to me once i need to be at the place in orchard t 11 i ride fronm eastcoast to orchard i told the driver we can go ecp and go out rochor road ,he went all the way to keppel rdand lower delta all the way to orchard i didn’t pay the extra i only pay the amt i usually pay like 12something
it happen to us too!there are grab driver who doesn’t wNt to go if i tell them the route we prefer to take to go in our destination and they prefer to go into their own which takes us longer and if we dont tell them which way we take they will take us a long ride that will make us pay bigger than the usual cost that we used to pay….and they get angry if we complain . I have experienced it so many times…. i am a FDW here in singapore
Good boss lodged complaints.Some taxi wd take you all around some tried to avoid traffic jame went on longer route.i had bad experience too.Some are so grumpy forgetting his earnings are frm passenger

Happened to me once. From lavender to tanjong rhu it cost us 18dollar. When i complained why did he go that way and it cost much he got angry come out of the cab like he want to hit me. I got scared and shot up coz I’m with a child. Since then whenever i ride a cab i direct him where to go or which way i want him to take.
