Following President Trump’s move to “decertify” the Iran nuclear deal on Friday, the Treasury Department announced new sanctions on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin was quoted by CNBC as saying the IRGC has “played a central role to Iran becoming the world’s foremost state sponsor of terror.”

Trump said, speaking on Friday, that the sanctions were “long overdue.”

“I urge our allies to join us in taking strong actions to curb Iran’s continued dangerous and destabilizing behavior, including through sanctions outside the Iran deal…”

Trump’s move to decertify the Iran nuclear deal falls short of abrogating the agreement, instead passing off further consideration to the Congress.
