The seven standing politburo members of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China were unveiled in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
On Wednesday, CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping, 64, and current standing politburo member Li Keqiang (62) renewed their terms as standing politburo members in the first plenary session of the 19th Central Committee, which followed an one-week-long 19th Party Congress ended Tuesday.
The five new standing politburo members came from the politburo of the 18th Central Committee. They include CPC General Office Director Li Zhanshu (67), Vice Premier Wang Yang (62), CPC Policy Research Office Director Wang Huning (62), CPC Central Committee’s Organization Department head Zhao Leji (60) and Shanghai Party Secretary Han Zheng (64).
The seven members of China’s top decision body were in line with the candidates suggested by recent media reports. They appeared in a media briefing on Wednesday but did not answer questions from the media.
Xi said at the briefing that China will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the opening of its economy in 2018 and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of New China in 2019. He said the country will continue to reform and open its economy to achieve a moderately prosperous society.
He said the CPC has set new targets for China’s development for the next five years and he hopes that media will continue to report the full picture of China and provide the country with constructive suggestions.
On behalf of the CPC Central Committee, Xi also said thank you to 814 foreign country leaders, who sent congratulation messages to China for the success of the 19th Party Congress over the past week.
