North Korea’s official newspaper Rodong Sinum says the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) attempted to assassinate leader Kim Jong-un in May.

Criticizing a UN decision to set up a “Counter-Terrorism Office” earlier this year, Rodong noted in a weekend commentary that the US was using the “pretext” of counter-terrorism and non-proliferation “to overthrow legitimate governments in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya one by one by waging military attacks on those countries.”

Citing an example, the newspaper alleged the US had made a previously undisclosed assassination try against Kim this spring using biological and chemical agents.

“In May this year, a group of heinous terrorists who infiltrated into our country on the orders of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the US and the South Korean puppet Intelligence Service with the purpose of carrying out a state-sponsored terrorism against our supreme headquarters using biological and chemical substance were caught and exposed. This palpably shows the true nature of the US as the main culprit behind terrorism,” Rodong said.

No other details of the alleged US plot were given.
