A swimmer was injured by a meter-long stingray which was stranded on a beach on Lantau Island on Sunday.
A witness surnamed Lam said a stingray was found on Upper Cheung Sha Beach on Lantau Island at about 4.30pm, Oriental Daily reported.
A number of swimmers had gathered at the spot and were trying to get the stingray back into the sea.
A female swimmer wrapped a towel around her hand and tried to pull the ray up, however, she was injured by barbed stingers on its tail.
The woman’s middle finger was stung and she immediately called for help.
Lifesavers called an ambulance and sent the woman to North Lantau Hospital after she complained of feeling dizzy.
Stingrays are usually not aggressive and only attack humans when provoked.
People who have contact with a stingray’s tail can suffer pain, swelling, muscle cramps from the venom, and may later endure infection from bacteria or fungi. Such an injury can be very painful, but they are rarely life-threatening unless the stinger pierces a vital area.
