The Institute of Studies for the Greater Bay Area (Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau) has been officially launched in Shenzhen, according to the 21st Century Business Herald on Thursday.

The new think tank was a collaborative effort involving the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission, Hong Kong Macau Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province and other government units of the Guangdong provincial government, including two state-linked media companies, the report said.

The new think tank aims to “uphold the spirit of reform and innovation” and to enhance international influence, the report said. It will also provide policy support for the greater Guangdong Bay area.

The think tank echoes President Xi Jinping’s call for “new types of think tanks with Chinese characteristics,” the report said, and it aims to take the lead in doing so.
